QUEEN BESS ISLAND RESTORATION

GRAND ISLE, LOUISIANA

Description

Queen Bess Island, located off the coast of Grand Isle, Louisiana, is known as one of the largest rookeries for the state’s brown pelicans. Pontchartrain Partners, LLC was tasked with restoring the island, which had dwindled to approximately 5 acres, and re-creating this natural habitat for our state bird. PPLLC re-enforced and shored up the breakwater around the island with fresh boulders, and it imported fresh sand to raise the island’s elevation and fill in areas that had been washed away over time. Ultimately, PPLLC restored Queen Bess Island to the 37-acre bird and fish sanctuary it was created to be.
